History of Stintino

Stintino’s history is closely connected to the nearby island of Asinara. The town was founded in 1885 when the original residents of Asinara were forcibly relocated to make way for a quarantine station and penal colony on the island.

The resettled fishermen and farmers named their new home “Stintino,” which means “intestine” in the local dialect, referring to the town’s long, narrow shape.
